It is the second wave of layoffs there in two months. In early January the plant laid off 34 hourly and 14 salaried workers.
The new layoffs will bring the work force down to 570, said John Tekowitz, manager of human resources for the division. The company has had to revise its market forecasts downward each week because of a decrease in orders, he said.
Ingersoll-Rand nonetheless is continuing construction of a $2 million expansion at the north Roanoke County plant, Tekowitz said. The company is forecasting a turnaround in the economy in the second half "and we are very hopeful we can recall these employees" later this year, he said. - Staff report
