The Virginia soldiers killed were Timothy A. Shaw, 21, of Alexandria, and Cpl. Jonathan Matthew Williams, 23, of Virginia Beach.
Williams was with the Army's 262nd Quartermaster Battalion, his family said. Shaw, 21, joined the National Guard at age 17, then transferred to the Army Reserve, according to his mother, Annette Brown, who received word of his death on Wednesday. He was activated last month with a water purification unit based in Greensburg, Pa.
Williams, born in Franklin, joined the Army soon after he graduated in 1986 from Green Run High School in Virginia Beach, where his family used to live. He was stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., for three years.
He was on inactive reserve when he was called back to service about six weeks ago.
Brown said she had cried after learning her son would be sent to the Middle East.
