Virginia (27-1) got its first-ever ACC Tournament victory over North Carolina (12-17) after three previous losses.
The Tar Heels were trading baskets with the Cavaliers through a scattered Virginia defense as the first half came to a close. But North Carolina committed four turnovers in the final two minutes, handing Virginia 10 points and swinging the momentum to the Cavaliers.
North Carolina finished with 20 turnovers.
Tammi Reiss and Heidi Burge scored 17 points apiece for Virginia, and Heather Burge added 16.
ACC player of the year Dawn Staley led Virginia in rebounds with 11. The Tar Heels limited Staley to five points, but she handed out 10 assists and made four steals.
Tonya Sampson scored 20 points for the Tar Heels. Sampson, who played most of the second half with four fouls, also pulled down nine rebounds. see
