VMI GRAD NAMED TO FOUNDATION POST

A Harrisonburg lawyer has been elected executive vice president of the VMI Foundation Inc. by the foundation's trustees, officials announced Monday.

George H. "Skip" Roberts Jr., senior partner with the firm of Wharton, Aldhizer and Weaver, will take over the position April 1.

Roberts is a 1968 academically distinguished graduate of VMI. He was the recipient of the First Jackson Hope Medal, the school's highest academic award.

He received his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1971 and served in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps Reserves.

Frank G. Louthan Jr., president of the foundation, said in a statement that he was pleased with the selection of Roberts as VMI's primary development officer.

"His broad experience, legal background and wide contacts will allow the institute to continue its successful fund-raising program," Louthan said.

VMI already has the highest per-capita endowment and the highest percentage of alumni giving of any public college or university in the country, he said.
