SUBWAY OPENS TODAY IN RADFORD

A Subway sandwich shop opens today at 1003 Norwood St., and another store is planned in Blacksburg by the end of April.

Scott Hillyard, an operations analyst for Subway Development Corp. in Washington, and his wife, Brenda, own the Radford store.

"I've been scouting the Radford-Blacksburg area for about a year now looking for the right location," Scott Hillyard said.

He chose downtown Radford because the store could pull customers from Radford University - just steps away - and the downtown business market. "I don't want to be a nine-month business," he said. "I want to be a 12-month business."

The Subway is beside East Coast Surf, Skate & Ski. The shop, offering eat-in and take-out submarine sandwiches, salads and soft drinks, will employ 15 full- and part-time workers, Hillyard said.

One of Subway's selling points is fresh bread, he said. "We bake our own bread on premises every four hours."

Hillyard said a lease also has been signed to open a Subway in the former College Market location on College Avenue in Blacksburg. That store should open in about 45 days, after the building is gutted and renovated in the Subway decor, he said.

Charlie Whitescarver, Radford Main Street project manager, said he was glad that the Hillyards concentrated their efforts on opening a Radford store first.

"Ever since he put up his signs saying he was coming, people have been talking about it," he said. "We're real excited to have Subway select Radford. It will add to the dining choices in Radford and Scott sounds like he wants to participate in Main Street promotions, so we're looking forward to it."

Subway, based in Connecticut, has more than 5,300 stores nationwide, Hillyard said, including Wytheville, Salem and Roanoke. The two new stores are the only Subways in the New River Valley.

The Radford shop's number is 633-1015. Hours are 10:30 a.m.-midnight Sundays and Mondays and 10:30 a.m.-2 a.m. Tuesday-Saturdays. A grand opening will be held soon.
