PANTHERS WHIP PITT IN BASEBALL OPENER

First baseman Gerald Smith had three hits and knocked in four runs to pace Ferrum to an 8-5 win over Division I Pittsburgh on Monday in the Panthers' baseball season opener.

Starter Robert Fuller, aided by seven early runs, pitched six strong innings for Ferrum, allowing three runs while striking out five.

Jeff Lamie contributed two hits to Ferrum's 13-hit attack.
