SOUTH KOREA SETS FIRST LOCAL VOTE IN 30 YEARS

The governing party of President Roh Tae-woo said Monday that local elections will be held this month for the first time in 30 years. Opponents denounced the move as a plot to cover up a major bribery scandal.

Officials said Roh would formally announce the elections in a speech to the nation today. The elections are tentatively set for March 26, officials said.

Opposition parties immediately announced plans to hold major protest rallies, starting this weekend. They charged that the elections are aimed at diverting public attention from a bribery scandal allegedly involving top government and party officials.
