Officer W.W. Young said the flag was attached to a column on the front porch of a residence on the Boulevard across from the Salem Civic Center. The 4--by-6-foot flag was destroyed about 9 p.m. Thursday.
U.G. Sturgill, who lives in the house, said he had been flying the flag for two or three weeks to show support for American troops in the Persian Gulf.
Young said police have no leads in the case.
