JOURNALIST WAS `GIANT OF PROFESSION'

Colleagues and former students attending a memorial service Monday for Clark R. Mollenhoff praised the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for his achievements in reporting and teaching.

Mollenhoff, who died Saturday at the age of 69, was a journalism professor at Washington and Lee University since 1976.

More than 300 people attended the service at Lexington Presbyterian Church.

Hampden H. Smith, head of the Washington and Lee University journalism department, called Mollenhoff "a giant in his profession."

John M. Kleghorn of Charlotte, N.C., a former student, said Mollenhoff was an inspiring teacher. "He held his students accountable just as he held public officials accountable," Kleghorn said.

A. Ernest Fitzgerald, a Department of Defense "whistle-blower," said Mollenhoff had a unique capacity to get to the bottom of the most complicated situation.

"Even while we mourn his death, we should celebrate his life and try to live up to the high standards he set for us," Fitzgerald said.

Burial will be Thursday in Lohrville, Iowa.
