NEWPORT NEWS PLANS TO LAY OFF 64 WORKERS

City Manager Edgar E. Maroney said 64 city employees will be laid off this month.

Maroney said many of the targeted employees are middle- and upper-level managers.

Maroney said Monday the layoffs are a response to the continuing budget crisis. Targeted employees will be notified Wednesday, Maroney said. The layoffs will take effect March 31.

Eliminating those jobs plus not filling 83 vacant positions will save the city $600,000 in salaries. But it must pay unemployment and vacation benefits for a net savings of $233,600 during the remainder of the fiscal year, which ends June 30.

In the next budget year, starting July 1, the job cuts will save the city $2.31 million, Maroney said.
