SEARCH CONTINUES FOR MISSING BOYS

Dozens of neighbors joined rescue workers searching through the night and early today for two young boys who disappeared while bicycling.

The boys had not been found at 6:30 a.m., said Karen Lincoln, a dispatcher for Virginia Beach Police, Fire and Rescue.

Their bikes were found at Birdneck Lake Monday. One of the bikes had been discovered with a bent wheel, the mother of one of the boys said.

The boys - Ashley Christopher "Scot" Weaver, 7, and Daniel Geier, 9 - were reportedly last seen about 5:30 p.m. at a grocery store.

More than 60 neighbors, police officers, firefighters, rescue workers and Navy personnel combed the woods around the lake. Divers searched Birdneck Lake.

But by 11 p.m. the divers were pulled out of the water, and police scaled back their search.

"They called it off somewhat at 3:45 a.m. But there were still people in the area," Lincoln said. "They took a break for an hour and resumed. They're out there now. They've had people volunteering from all over the state with tracking dogs to come out and help."

The bicycles were found about 8:10 p.m. at Birdneck Lake, just south of the Navy Amphibious Base. One bicycle was submerged in the lake with its handlebars just above the surface. The other was found about 30 to 40 yards from the water partially submerged in the swampy woods that surround the lake.
