NOT ALL LEARNING IS IN THE CLASSROOM

I AM RESPONDING to the misconception that a year-long school session is worth studying.

Knowledge is important to my future. Yet my education does not depend solely on time spent at school.

The lyrics to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" piqued interest of students to research prominent leaders mentioned. Many teen-agers wish to stay informed about current events; I read the newspaper and watch national news. Someone came up with the concept of homework that makes school a full-time project, especially since I'm involved with extracurricular activities.

Summers enhance my life with various experiences. By participating in summer camps, I met many people with different opinions. I volunteered as a candy-striper and gained a valuable perspective on life. Some things cannot be taught in a classroom.

I will never cease to learn, especially if I have the chance to take advantage of all life has to offer. As citizens, students should become involved in society, not confined to a classroom, year-long. RACHEL MASON BUCHANAN
