BLUE CROSS/SHIELD REVENUES UP 12%

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia has reported net income of $58.4 million last year, down 15.6 percent from $69.3 million in 1989. Earned premiums, equivalent to revenues, rose 12.5 percent to $1.8 billion from $1.6 billion in 1989.

James Goss, spokesman for the Richmond-based health insurer with operations in Roanoke, said the 1989 earnings included sale of a computer subsidiary.

The company said its customer base grew by more than 40,000 contracts in 1990 to an all-time high of 983,053 contracts, representing more than 1.8 million policy holders. Blue Cross/Blue Shield is Virginia's largest health insurer. - Staff report
