CHLORINE VAPORS SEND SEVEN TO HOSPITAL

Chlorine vapors forced the evacuation of a seafood processing plant and sent seven workers to a hospital, fire officials said today.

Battalion Chief N.G. Blackstone said fluid seeped into a 100-pound drum of granular chlorine at the J.H. Miles Co., producing "a very strong smell." He said the incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday.

Seven workers complained of respiratory problems and were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where they were treated and released, Blackstone said.

Blackstone said the vapor dissipated quickly after the drum was taken outside the building. He said officials have not determined the nature of the fluid that reacted with the chlorine.
