LOSS ELIMINATES REBELS FROM ECHL PLAYOFF PICTURE

The Richmond Renegades scored two early goals, then dodged knuckles for two periods on their way to a 4-1 East Coast Hockey League victory against the Roanoke Valley Rebels Saturday night.

Combined with Nashville's 6-5 win against Greensboro, the loss eliminated the Rebels from any ECHL postseason opportunity.

Other than a Marco Fuster power-play goal in the second period, Roanoke Valley accomplished little else than brawling with opposing players and continual taunting of Richmond head coach Dave Allison, who coached in the Roanoke Valley for the Virginia Lancers last season.

The Renegades got all they needed in the first period on goals by Steve Scheifele and Steve Spott. Richmond outshot Roanoke Valley 17-1 in the opening period and 45-22 for the game.

Not surprisingly, the fighting got heavy late in the third period, resulting in the ejection of Rebels' Rob Sangster and Rob Wilson. After knocking linesman John Horan to the ice, Wilson attempted to climb in the stands to confront some of the 6,416 spectators on hand.

The Rebs play host to Erie tonight in their final home game, then travel to Louisville Tuesday to close the season.
