MOST FAMOUS LANDMARK IS CHURCH

AS A FORMER resident of Roanoke, I found in the (March 3) letter of Edward T. McMahon an interesting question: "Who can imagine Roanoke without its most famous landmark?"

For many living in the area, and for many who previously lived in Roanoke, even if the Hotel Roanoke were to disappear, the city's most famous landmark would remain. It sits just above the hotel. No one entering or leaving the city from downtown can miss it. Your greatest landmark is St. Andrew's Catholic Church.

To the Norfolk Southern and Virginia Tech, there may be a question as to which building in the city is the most famous; but even after the world changes our style of Southern genteel living such as the Hotel Roanoke provided, St. Andrew's will remain!

Yes, the hotel is famous for its setting, its former charm as a center of gracious living, and for its unique architectural heritage; but there is no building in the beautiful city of Roanoke that can compare to the one that sits "on the hill."

In that building you have a treasure and a landmark that will stand for many generations to come. Treasure it, for you may have one of the truly great buildings in the entire state. REV. WILLIAM S. O'BRIEN WAYNESBORO
