AIRLINES LAUNCH NEW FARE WAR

American and Delta airlines Wednesday announced broad new fare discounts designed to get travelers flying again, and other airlines moved quickly to match them.

American announced fare discounts, available through April 8, aimed at vacation travelers, and Delta launched a 20 percent discount on three-day advance-purchase refundable tickets targeted at business travelers. Then each airline matched the other's promotion, and other major airlines began matching both - at least in markets where they compete with American or Delta.

American said its "jump-start" fare promotion was the widest ever, altering more than 1 million fares, and announced it plans a fare "restructuring" that will kick in April 9. - Washington Post
