The Muscular Dystrophy Association is sponsoring its annual shamrock sale to raise funds.

Through Sunday, various restaurants, bars, and grocery and convenience stores will have cardboard shamrocks for sale for $1. Patrons may write their names or a message on the shamrocks. This year, Roanoke-area residents are encouraged to show support for U.S. troops in the Persian Gulf by buying shamrocks in their honor.

All proceeds will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. For more information, call 772-3237.

Former Hollins student is Queen of Carnival

A former Hollins College student reigned as Queen of Carnival for the Rex Organization at Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Elizabeth Shaw Nalty, who attended Hollins from 1988-90, participated in the traditional parade, sponsored by Rex, one of the two oldest Mardi Gras organizations. The king, queens and courts of the Rex and Comus organizations traditionally meet after their post-parade balls.

Nalty's twin sister, Helen, a junior at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, served as queen for the Comus Organization, marking the first time in Mardi Gras history that twin sisters have served as queens of Carnival and Comus.

Nalty was a member of the Hollins Singers, vice president of the Hollins Senate and did volunteer work at the Hollins College Preschool Center.
