ANTI-SEMITISM CHARGE SPLITS DEPARTMENT

An applicant to teach a course on the New Testament at the University of Richmond was denied the job because he is Jewish, a faculty adviser at Princeton University and a Richmond professor have charged.

University of Richmond President Richard L. Morrill denied the anti-Semitism charge. He said the department "was deeply divided and unable to reach a consensus."

John G. Gager, the applicant's faculty adviser, made the allegation in a letter to Morrill.

Robert S. Alley, a humanities professor, accused fellow professor Robison B. James of making religion a test for the job in violation of university policy.
