A FALLEN SON, A COMMUNITY'S SUPPORT

AT TIMES, the past two weeks seem like a dream, but the reality of the loss of my son is always there. My emotions have ranged from grief and disbelief to joyful memories of the good times when all my family was together.

During this ordeal, I have found an inner strength from my faith and the genuine love and concern expressed in many ways by hundreds of people throughout the Roanoke Valley. Rev. William Ross and the members of the Vinton Baptist Church have provided emotional and spiritual support. The citizens and employees of the Town of Vinton have been at my beck and call with food, visits and a feeling of support from a community of friends.

The students and faculty at William Byrd High School have been generous in their time and talents in visits at the funeral home and in support of the scholarship fund. The VMI Keydets, alumni and faculty have offered their support and many fond recollections of Terry's years at VMI.

Appalachian Power Co. has proven again that we are family, and its care and support have been beyond any expectation. Last, but certainly not least, are the many people throughout the Roanoke Valley and the state who have communicated their care and concern in many, many ways.

The news media have been very kind in their remarks. I sincerely appreciate the dignity and responsible manner in which news representatives have dealt with Terry's death and funeral. Their support of the scholarship fund is also appreciated.

Terry was proud of his country and his profession. He was fighting for the country we love and for the principle of freedom throughout the world. I know he was doing what he wanted to do and believed that what he was doing was right. I am comforted by this knowledge.

A simple "thank you" seems inadequate, but we want the Roanoke Valley to know we appreciate the many expressions of kindness and know that many people feel and share with us in our loss. DORIS C. PLUNK VINTON
