`REDSKINS' ALSO HAVE FOUGHT FOR AMERICA

THE ARTICLE by Ray Garland March 7 includes a disturbing statement: "America was united from sea to shining sea and has held her own for 200 years because enough of her people were prepared to confront redskins, redcoats, Mexicans, Germans, Japanese, Russians and Saddam Hussein." Is he suggesting tha native Americans are not of our people?

The Indian Wars, which began in Virginia at least by 1622, were characterized by atrocities and retaliation on both sides. The Indians were defending themselves against a horde of European invaders bringing diseases and food deprivation. Yet some of these "redskins" have fought with great distinction for America's people in the wars to which he refers. JOHN H. WOOLWINE ROANOKE
