THE TIPOFF

HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS: The Boys of the Lough will bring their pipes, flutes, fiddles, whistles and whatnot to the Lenfest Center at Washington and Lee Universty in Lexington tonight for an 8 o'clock concert.

The quintet - three Irishmen, an Englishman and a Scot - has been nominated twice for Grammys and boasts of 12 recordings, as well.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for students age 12 and under. The tickets may be ordered by calling 463-9232. \

ENCHANTMENT: Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific" is the latest offering from the Broadway Series at Virginia Tech. The road show of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical will play at Burruss Auditorium on Saturday night at 7:30.

It's produced by Opera Northeast of New York.

Tickets are $16 for the general public, $12 for Tech faculty and staff and $5 for tech students.

GIMME THAT JAZZ: Guitarist Charlie Byrd will play Saturday night at 9 at the Ellington Fellowship Playhouse in Lynchburg. Tickets are $12.50 and they may be ordered by calling (804) 845-2162.

Byrd is famous for the bossa nova beat and for his musical longevity. He initially gained recognition in the 1940s. \

BLUES IN THE NIGHT: The Metropolitan Blues All-Stars will play a benefit for Lime Kiln Arts in Lexington Saturday night at 9 at the Washington and Lee University Student Pavilion.

Tickets are $17 each, $30 for couples in advance, and increase to $20 and $35, respectively, at the door.

TREE JUICE: The Whitetop Mountain Maple Syrup Festival kicks off Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with food and music. It'll be repeated next weekend, March 30 and 31, as well.

The Mount Rogers School House on U.S. 58 will feature the pancake meals and arts and crafts. Music will be played at the Mount Rogers Fire Hall. There'll be food for sale there, too.

GREAT DAME: Petrus Bosman and the Virginia School of the Arts in Lynchburg will honor the late Dame Margot Fonteyn tonight with "An Evening of Elegance '91," and an elegant evening it promises to be.

Dancers from the Boston Ballet, the Joffrey, the Cincinnati and Washington ballets, Ballet West and London's Royal Ballet will perform at 7:45 at E.C. Glass Auditorium in Lynchburg.

Remaining tickets are priced at $35, $50 and $75.

The cultural attache from the British Embassy in Washington will be guest of honor.

ACTING OUT: "I Believe in Make Believe" opens today at Mill Mountain Theatre at Roanoke's Center in the Square. This children's drama sponsored by the Junior League of Roanoke Valley Inc. presents five Grimm fairy tales in a musical setting.

Shows will be today at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 10 a.m., noon, 3, 5 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday afternoon at 1:30, 3:30 and 5:30.

RAISED VOICES: J.S. Bach's "Missa Brevis in F" and Franz Joseph Haydn's "Mass for St. John of God" will be performed Saturday night at 9 by the Blacksburg Master Chorale and Orchestra. Craig Field directs.

The concert will be at Blacksburg Baptist Church. Tickets are $5 for the general public, $4 for students.

Organist James Bryant will perform Bach's "Concerto for Harpsichord in F minor" on a new instrument. \

EAT UP: "Tasting and Toasting," the annual fund-raiser for Planned Parenthood of Southwest Virginia, will be Sunday evening from 5 to 7 at Hollins College.

It features gourmet specialties from noted restaurants and caterers as well as products from Virginia wineries.

TROUBADOUR: John Stewart, the weathered baritone from way back, will sing Sunday night at the Iroquois Club in Roanoke. Things generally start around 9 over there. Radar Rose, featuring Jane Hicks, will open the show. \

LOCAL FOLKS: Guitarist and singer Mickey Nelson will present his tuneful renditions tonight from 8:30 to 11 at the Crystal Spring Deli in South Roanoke.

And Truckers Delight, players with punch, will appear tonight at the Barrel House in Salem.
