CDC: ALCOHOL PART OF FEWER FATAL CRASHES

For the first time, fewer than one in five young drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking, federal safety researchers said Thursday.

"But it's a good news-bad news story," said Dr. Julie Russell of the national Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. "We're still losing lots and lots of young people to this problem."

Among the 15-to-17-year-old drivers involved in fatal car crashes in 1989, 19 percent had been drinking, the CDC reported. That's down from 22 percent the year before and from 32 percent in 1982. - Associated Press
