SHUCK: DEFENSE PLAYS WELL IN SCRIMMAGE

With the exception of two long touchdown passes, VMI head coach Jim Shuck was pleased with the defensive unit in the Keydets' first scrimmage of spring practice Saturday.

"The two touchdowns came on play action," Shuck said. "But overall, our defensive effort was good. One of our major points of emphasis coming into the spring was to do a better job stopping the run, and we did that today."

One of the touchdown passes was from Frank Wilder to split end Doug Robinson for 55 yards, while the other was on a halfback option from former North Cross player Eric Walker to former James River receiver Wesley Poff covering 60 yards.

Shuck experimented with 13 different running backs on offense, and said the Keydets must get better on the offensive line, where they lost three starters from last season.

VMI will have one more scrimmage next Friday afternoon with the spring game scheduled for Saturday, April 6, at 2 p.m. on Alumni Field in Lexington. - Staff report
