SCHOOL'S OLD GLORY WAS SHORT OF STARS

It took 30 years and the alert eyes of an eighth-grader to notice that the U.S. flag gallantly streaming in the auditorium at Azalea Gardens Middle School was missing two stars.

The star-short flag had been waving since the school opened in 1961, two years after Alaska and Hawaii joined the Union.

Michael Hebert noticed the stars were missing during an orchestra rehearsal last month.

The student Builders Club chipped in $10 to buy a new flag and Rep. Owen Pickett, D-Va., got it flown over the U.S. Capitol to give it some first-class wear.
