RADAR COST HIKE WOULD BE A BURDEN

WHEN I first heard of RADAR, I was delighted that the city where I lived cared enough about its handicapped senior citizens to try to help them maintain independence while providing safe, dependable transportation for medical and social needs. Of course there were problems, but the city seemed more than willing to work with us.

At first there was only one van, which was constantly booked, so another van was purchased. This year the citizens who use or try to use this service suggested another van purchase. The city seemed very receptive.

There is only one problem. When one lives on a limited income, every cent has to be handled with great care. Any increase in cost causes a burden on the very people RADAR is designed to help. I have found that this is a shock to me and others I have talked to. If $1.50 isn't much, why can't they, instead of we, do without the money?

I feel that a great deal can be done to improve the appointment scheduling problems, and the city needs to look into the concerns of the handicapped citizens who use the services of RADAR on a regular basis. PEARL WELLS ROANOKE
