The workers will be idled until April 22, although some hourly workers will be coming to the plant to complete special jobs and finish work, according to Jan Toennisson, director of communications for the foundry's parent company, Intermet Foundries.
The company's stockpile of iron castings, manufactured for automobiles and pumps, was built up this spring as the company entered contract negotiations. The United Steelworkers Union signed a new contract with the company Feb. 28.
The plant plans to recall all of its workers next month and anticipates no further shutdowns or layoffs this year, according to Toennisson.
The plant's 56 salaried workers are continuing in their jobs during the shutdown.
