BEDFORD COUNTY SECURES OPTIONS FOR LANDFILL SPACE

Bedford County's Board of Supervisors has made arrangements to get options on the last pieces of land it needs for a new landfill along Virginia 43.

The board authorized its chairman this week to buy options on two parcels seven miles south of Bedford, according to County Administrator William Rolfe:

Ten acres, including a 50-by-60-foot auto-body repair shop building from Leo and Norma Jean Teass. The purchase price would be $67,000.

More than 10 acres with road frontage from Henry and Alec Flowers for a purchase price of $43,000.

The supervisors also agreed to obtain 27 acres from Dick Walker. In exchange, the county will give Walker 19 acres which it already purchased but will not use for the landfill.

The options bring the county's total acreage for the landfill to about 210.

Last month, the supervisors got options on 182 acres at a purchase price of $224,500. If all the options are exercised, the county would pay $334,500.

Rolfe said the county is prepared to file preliminary application for development of the site with the state Department of Waste Management.

The landfill is expected to cost about $30.5 million over the next 30 to 35 years.
