The board listened to residents along the various roads Monday night, some of whom wanted the changes and others who wanted the names to stay the same.
Virginia 662 in the Dublin area was particularly complex. Ruritan National, with headquarters there, had asked that the name be changed from Lyons Road to Ruritan Road. Some of the residents said they wanted to keep the Lyons name.
A compromise discussed was to name only the 10th of a mile near the national headquarters as Ruritan Road, and leave the rest designated as Lyons Road. That did not satisfy the Lyons contingent, however.
Other proposed changes that drew opposition included Virginia 690 from Earhart to Shelburne Road, Virginia 642 from Manns to Fort Hill Drive, Virginia 801 from Southern Road to Whitt Ridge, Virginia 725 from Carter Street to Brown Road, and Virginia 670 from Morris to Miller-Owens Road. Those changes will be considered at the board's April 22 meeting.
Name changes that were approved, mostly in response to petitions by residents living along them, included:
Virginia 633, Poor House to Owens Road; Virginia 708, Henley to Bethel Church Road; Virginia 687, Lloyd to Church Hill Lane; Virginia 612, Hampton Mines to Creek Road; Virginia 681, Sifford to McCoy Road; Virginia 807, Old Slaughter House to Hatcher Road; Virginia 697, Lowe's Ferry to Towe's Ferry Road; Virginia 693, Lead Mines to Julia Simpkins Road; Virginia 693, Lead Mines to Farris Mines Road; Virginia 645, Off Canterbury Road to Foxcroft Circle, and Virginia 709, Burley Horton to Burleigh Horton Road.
