SHIPYARD CUTTING STAFF THROUGH ATTRITION

Newport News Shipbuilding is tightening its belt through attrition, on the chance the yard won't get a contract to build the Navy's newest class of submarines.

"We're letting attrition take its course and that's part of a cautious thing until we see what's going to happen," company spokesman Jack Garrow said Tuesday. The shipyard is the state's largest employer, with about 29,000 workers.

The Navy is expected to announce soon which shipyard has landed the $1.78 billion contract to build the next Seawolf-class sub. Both Newport News Shipbuilding and the Electric Boat division of General Dynamics Corp. in Groton, Conn., have lobbied hard for the job. - Associated Press
