POLICE MAKE SECOND ARREST IN FATAL BEATING

A second man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a Roanoke man, who died Sunday after being beaten on 13th Street Southwest Friday night.

Johnnie Albert Hampton, 24, turned himself in at the magistrate's office at the Roanoke Jail shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday.

He was being held in lieu of a $5,000 bond.

Rufus David Hicks Jr. died at Roanoke Memorial Hospital about 7:15 a.m. Sunday. He had been released from Community Hospital Friday night, but went to Roanoke Memorial about 4:30 a.m. Saturday after complaining about pain and swelling in his head.

Sunday, Poindexter Demitris Penny, 21, of the 700 block of 13th Street Southwest, was also charged with murder. He was still in Roanoke Jail Wednesday night.

Police found Hicks lying on the ground shortly after 10 p.m. Friday bleeding from injuries to his face, head and upper body. He told them he had been beaten on the head and back by two men who jumped him from behind.

Hicks told police he was knocked to the ground, got up and went after several men. He was beaten again before police responded to a call about a fight.
