CAVE SPRING BOYS TRIP HERITAGE IN TRACK

Cave Spring's boys' track and field team pounded defending Group AAA indoor and outdoor champion Heritage 93-46 in Lynchburg as Tiki and Ronde Barber had four first places between them in individual events and ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay team.

The Pioneers were without several sprinters who had helped them win two state titles in the past year.

The Cave Spring girls, who finished fifth in the outdoor state meet last spring, ripped the Pioneers 84-29.

\ BASEBALL: Andy Dewease gave up one hit over five innings and struck out nine as William Byrd routed North Cross 16-6 at the Terriers' field. Dewease also had a single and double and three runs batted in, and Josh Herman added two doubles and a single for Byrd (3 1/2- 1/2).

T.J. Lange of North Cross (0-1) hit a grand slam in a six-run seventh inning.

Northside's Kelly Dampeer helped the Vikings romp in their opener as they whipped Christiansburg 8-3. Chris Hatcher and Allan Christian each added two hits for the host Vikings.

Freshman Mark Freelan pitched four innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven Blue Demons (0-1).

\ SOFTBALL: Leigh Stull, Yo Helm and Katherine Minahan had three hits each as Salem defeated Carroll County 17-6 in a non-district game.

Debbie Cobb, Kelly Robinson, Pam Feazell and Dee Garrett had two hits each for the Spartans (4-0). Helm had four RBI. Nine Salem players had hits.

At Glenvar, the Highlanders, who played in the Group A semifinals a year ago, opened their season by whacking William Byrd 10-2.

Stephanie Martin gave up one hit in five innings as the winning pitcher. She also had a two-run double in the first inning to cap a five-run first by driving in two runs.

Marcee Hufton, the losing pitcher for Byrd, hit a three-run double in the seventh for the Terriers (2-1).

William Fleming won its first game in three starts by outslugging Alleghany 14-8 on the Colonels' field as Linda Bell hit two triples and a double to drive in four runs.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Andy McDonald and Tres Moore had a goal and an assist each and Ryan Cook added a goal as North Cross defeated host Northside 3-1.

Stewart Baucom anchored a defense that helped the Raiders (3-0-1) preserve their lead in the second half after Northside (0-3-0) scored on an own goal by North Cross.

In Covington, James River (1-0-1) topped Alleghany 3-0 as Tom Eide scored a goal and assisted on another. Alleghany is 0-2.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Chanda Ingram scored a goal in the first half, Lisa Beightol scored on a penalty shot in the second half and Jennifer Kagey led a strong defensive effort as Cave Spring (2-1) stopped visiting Martinsville 2-0 in a non-district match.

Kristal Lassiter assisted on Ingram's goal. Allison McWhorter had six saves and Michelle Godley had eight for the Knights (2-1).
