CORPORATE GREED? WHAT OF ATHLETES?

ALLOW ME to take the part of "Lord" in, "Lord knows how much top-level management cost AT&T shareholders per year" (March 18 letter from Christiansburg reader). Using data from the AT&T 1990 Annual Report and the Notice of 1991 Annual Meeting & Proxy Statement:

The cash compensation for executive officers as a group (21 persons) was $13,529,888. That equals 1.24 cents per share, less than one-half of 1 percent of 1990 earnings. It equals $5.44 per shareholder, the average holding being 439 shares.

If that is large corporation greed, how does Christiansburg reader describe the ridiculously high salaries paid to the large number of professional athletes for cavorting around the gridiron or diamond a few weeks a year? Or do I gore the wrong ox? EDWARD D. SPEAR BEDFORD
