The Hokies, searching for Frankie Allen's replacement as basketball coach, apparently are focusing their attention on Kansas assistant Jerry Green, whose Jayhawks play North Carolina in one semifinal game today.
A source familiar with Tech's search said it is on hold "until they see what the Jayhawks do."
"He said he couldn't talk [to Tech about the job] until after the tournament," the source said of Green.
Braine and Tech associate athletic director Danny Monk have talked with Green. The Hokies also are known to have contacted Portland Trail Blazers assistant coach John Wetzel, and it is believed Braine has chatted with Division II Virginia Union head coach Dave Robbins. Wetzel and Robbins have expressed interest in the job, although Robbins would not confirm that he had talked with Braine.
It is not known whether Tech has contacted any other potential candidates. Tech's screening committee is believed to have met twice in the last week, but a source familiar with the search said no candidates have been interviewed formally.
Several other coaches, including Furman's Butch Estes, Tennessee-Chattanooga's Mack McCarthy, Towson State's Terry Truax, Coastal Carolina's Russ Bergman and Siena's Mike Deane, have expressed their interest in the job.
