The symposium will begin with a morning session on air quality, featuring Wallace Davis, executive director of the Virginia Deparment of Air Pollution Control, and Pamela F. Faggert, his assistant. Also on the panel will be two officials from industry and a forestry professor.
This afternoon's session will be devoted to water issues. Gail Mallard of the U.S. Geological Survey; R.L. Hundley, an environmental engineer for the Department of Transportation; and Fred F. Cunningham of the state Water Control Board will be joined by four commercial specialists. Also on that panel will be Keith J. Buttleman, administrator for Virginia's Council on the Environment.
An early-bird session beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday will look at legal aspects of environmental issues. David S. Bailey, director of Virginia Environmental Defense Fund, and two other lawyers will discuss water, clean air and hazardous waste management from the legal viewpoint.
The 9:30 a.m. session on Wednesday will be on waste management, including public works directors from Lynchburg and Arlington County, Roanoke's recycling coordinator, Norfolk Naval Base's recycling program manager, and two commercial experts.
The final session, at 1 p.m., will be devoted to remediation and health aspects of environmental problems. It features five doctors on various health issues along with two experts from industry.
The symposium is sponsored by Virginia Power and VMI Research Laboratories and directed by Capt. Ron Erchul, a professor in VMI's department of civil and environmental engineering.
