DEYERLE GROUP SAW NEED FOR CHANGE

IN RESPONSE to William T. Pedigo's letter March 22: The Greater Deyerle Neighborhood Association is comprised of concerned residents working together under the city's neighborhood partnership plan. We are dedicated to protecting and preserving our neighborhood.

We have an interest in and concern for the quality of life in our neighborhood and the impact Peters Creek Road Extension will have on our streets. Because of our involvement, we have seen the need for changes and improvements before our city officials did.

The city's traffic counts have been steadily increasing as more and more motorists cut through our neighborhood for convenience or to save time. Our streets are not designed to handle all the additional traffic that has resulted from this steady increase and from the projected impact of the Peters Creek Road Extension. Traffic patterns that were sufficient five years ago are not meeting the needs of the motorist today.

Our members have worked long and hard to communicate our concerns to city officials and council members. The traffic-control measures that were put in place were approved by experts from the city and the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The controls may cause some inconvenience, but according to current information from the Police Department, they do not present a safety concern. In fact, the new patterns have helped reduce the number of accidents in our neighborhood. People in our neighborhood should be supportive of our association's membership and the positive contributions they are making. SHARON B. HUBBELL ROANOKE
