GRUMMAN PLANNING TO LAY OFF 1,900

The Grumman Corp. announced Tuesday that it would lay off 1,900 workers, about three-fourths of them on Long Island, because of cuts in defense spending and a need to trim expenses to become more competitive.

The aerospace and transportation manufacturer, based in Bethpage, N.Y., said the reductions amounted to 7.4 percent of its work force of 25,600. The development dealt another blow to the New York metropolitan area's economy, since Grumman is Long Island's largest private employer, with 14,600 workers there.

The Grumman announcement includes the 110 jobs that the company several weeks ago said it would eliminate at its space-station support division in Reston, Va. Thirty-four jobs were cut there in January, as well.
