RELIGION BRIEFS

AN INDOOR CAMP MEETING is in progress through Sunday at First Church of the Nazarene, 739 Highland Ave. S.E. It is led by Stephen W. Nease and Jane Greene Johnson with worship nightly through Saturday at 7 and on Sunday at 6 p.m. A nursery is available.

\ ST. TIMOTHY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH of Vinton will observe its 20th anniversary April 28 at the 11 a.m. service. Bishop Richard F. Bansemer of Salem will preach. The Rev. Janet L. Ramsey, pastor, said the service and a reception following are open especially to former pastors and members. Ramsey became pastor in November.

\ "POLICING OUR COMMUNITIES IN THE '90s" will be the theme of Jeffrey B. Spence of Richmond for the Monday meeting of the interfaith Roanoke Valley Ministers Conference.

Spence, who, since 1978 has been regional director of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, will speak at First Presbyterian Church, South Jefferson at McClanahan streets, at 10:30 a.m. Spence is ordained in the United Church of Christ. He plans and leads programs for better human understanding, especially in the fields of police training, youth leadership, intergroup relationships and applied ethics.

\ CHILDREN AS PEACEMAKERS will be the theme of a workshop April 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bonsack United Methodist Church. Kathleen and James McGinnis, founders of two ecumenical national agencies and authors of "Parenting for Peace and Justice," will be the leaders. The workshop is especially for parents, Christian educators and church planners. Registration is needed by Monday; call 977-4212.

\ A CHRISTIAN CONVERT FROM ISLAM, Dr. Kaya Essen, will speak April 14 at 10 and 11 a.m. and at 7 p.m. at Riverland Road Baptist Church, 459 Riverland Road S.E. Essen is of Turkish background.

\ THE REV. NORMAN ARRINGTON, a biblical dramatist, will conduct revival services April 20 and 21 at Riverdale Baptist Church, 1624 Edgerton Ave. S.E. Arrington, a former Roanoker, now conducts a ministry of dramatic monologues from his home in Princeton, W.Va. His programs will be at 7 p.m. Saturday and at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday.

\ LORETTA SMITH EWALD has joined the staff of Belmont United Methodist Church as organist and choir director. The native of Covington, now living in Roanoke, will succeed Frances Rhodes, interim director and organist.

\ YOUTH AND RACE IN THE ROANOKE VALLEY will be the theme of Melinda J. Payne Sunday at a 7:30 breakfast at Slate Hill Baptist Church, 4354 Elm View Road S.W. Payne is a member of Roanoke's Community Relations Task Force, which seeks to ease racial tensions in the valley.

\ ROANOKE AREA MINISTRIES will benefit from a Hollins College cleanup project April 13. Students, under the coordination of Jeri Suarez, will clean and paint RAM House, the day shelter for the homeless.

\ THE UNITARIAN-UNIVERSALIST CHURCH of the Roanoke Valley will host the Thomas Jefferson District meeting of congregations in Virginia April 12 and 13. An address, open to the public, will be presented at the 11 a.m. Saturday session by the Rev. Dr. F. Forrester Church of All Souls Unitarian Church in New York. He is the author of 15 books including one on Thomas Jefferson's Bible.

\ WYCLIFFE ASSOCIATES, an ecumenical agency that translates the Bible into languages spoken by traditionally non-Christian people, has scheduled a fund-raising banquet April 15 at Holiday Inn Airport. Tickets for the free event at 7 p.m. are available by calling David Leaman, 345-5345. The work of the Wycliffe organization will be described at the meeting and an offering taken.

\ THE UNITED METHODIST HISTORICAL SOCIETY of the Roanoke District has observed its sixth anniversary. The group meets quarterly for lectures on aspects of United Methodist history in Western Virginia. On bus trips, the approximately 25 members have visited old churches and learned of their roles in the development of communities. Retired pastor Alpheus W. Potts is the program director.
