FOOD BANK TO USE JAIL CELL FOR STORAGE

An unused jail cell in Craig County will hold an unusual inmate. It will become a holding cell for food for a proposed food bank.

The Craig County supervisors Monday granted Sheriff Billy B. McPherson's request to store food in the holding cell.

McPherson said the cell is no longer needed for prisoners. But the county's churches, which are getting together to begin a food bank program, need a place to store food.

Ministers in the county are in the early stages of setting up a program, but have not designated anyone to lead it, McPherson said.

In another matter, the supervisors gave their approval to an anti-litter program to kick off on April 20, Earth Day.

The program will be operated by the Keep Craig Beautiful group that is attempting to educate people not to discard trash so that it becomes litter.

Paul Paradzinski, a member of Keep Craig Beautiful, said the group has decided to use its annual grant of $2,800 from the state to aid Rocket Retreat, a youth center in New Castle.

But the annual spring cleanup will be held as usual, he said, starting on April 20 and running through April 27.

Instead of the usual roadside pickup of trash, however, this year's effort will be toward encouraging recycling and trying to educate people not to litter, Paradzinski said.

On another matter, the supervisors appointed C. D. Hypes to represent the Simmonsville Magisterial District on the County Planning Commission.

The supervisors also learned that the central area of New Castle has passed its first test toward winning a listing in the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.

An evaluation committee with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources has concluded that the New Castle Historic District is eligible for the two listings.

But the committee's findings must be approved by the State Review Board. After that, a formal application must be filed to list New Castle in the state historical register, which may lead to a listing in the national register.
