BUSINESSMEN PLAN FRANKLIN COUNTY COMMUNITY CENTER

Two businessmen are studying the possibility of developing a community center for residents of Rocky Mount and Franklin County.

Wayne Cundiff, president of Cundiff Lumber Co., and William Lawson, owner of Central Oil of Virginia Corp., have held several meetings to generate support.

"We're still in the infancy of it," Cundiff, a former Town Council member, said Friday.

As envisioned, the project would be a multiple-purpose recreational and community center for residents of all ages.

Cundiff and Lawson are trying to form a steering committee to find a potential site, obtain a cost estimate and consider alternative sources of funding.

"Obviously, Bill and I aren't going to build it ourselves," Cundiff said. "We need the help of 100 people and a combined effort from the town and county."

Cundiff said the committee would have more concrete plans within a few weeks.
