NAACP'S NARROW GOALS NEED REFORM

IN ITS CAMPAIGN to create black legislative districts in Virginia, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People - supported by the American Civil Liberties Union - apparently declares that blacks vote only for blacks, whites for whites, etc.

That is exactly opposite to what Gov. Wilder seeks in his presidential bid. He woos color-blind support, as he received in the governor's race.

It is way past time the NAACP dropped "colored" from its title and reformed its narrow goals. It should become the National Association for the Advancement of People. The ACLU should devote its energy to restoration of broader representation in state government by breaking the near monopoly held by lawyers in the legislature, the executive and the judiciary.
