BREAST IMPLANT MAKERS TOLD TO PROVE SAFETY

The government on Wednesday gave makers of silicone breast implants 90 days to prove that the devices implanted in millions of American women are safe - or stop selling them.

In issuing its rule on the subject Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration cited a series of concerns about breast implants, including infection, pain, hardening of the surrounding breast tissue, false mammography results and silicone leaks.

Questions also have been raised about the potential for long-term risks such as immune reactions and cancer, the agency said.
