SLAYING SUSPECT WAS SLATED TO BE RESIDENT DOCTOR

Dr. Jean-Claude Pierre Hill - a Virginian accused of fatally shooting an insurance executive and wounding two others - had tentatively been accepted as a hospital psychiatric resident.

Hahnemann University Hospital spokeswoman Phyllis Fisher emphasized that Hill's final acceptance had been contingent on a background check that had not been completed.

Had nothing detrimental been uncovered, he would have started his residency May 6.

The 29-year-old Hill was arrested Tuesday while jogging near his father's home in Surry County, Va. He was arraigned Wednesday.

Police said the three insurance executives were randomly shot on a busy street at lunchtime.

According to records, Hill had a history of mental problems. A court order on Sept. 1, 1989, committed Hill to the John Randolph Hospital in Hopewell, Va., after he brandished a loaded .357 Magnum.

Other records show that last year he was a patient at Veterans Administration hospitals in Hampton and Salem, Va.
