JAPANESE TRADE SURPLUS RISES 24%

Japan's trade surplus swelled by 24 percent in March to its highest level in more than two years, the Finance Ministry said today.

The ministry said the country's exports exceeded imports by $8.72 billion during the month, up from $7.03 billion a year earlier.

Japan posted a surplus of $3.81 billion in trade with the United States, up slightly from the $3.76 billion registered a year earlier.

Japan's overall trade surplus in March was its largest since the $9.72 billion posted in December 1988, the ministry said.
