WINN-DIXIE CLOSING AT ROANOKE SITE

Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. said Thursday it will close its supermarket on Virginia 419 near Tanglewood Mall on April 30.

Ivan Hardesty, spokesman in Raleigh, N.C. for the Jacksonville, Fla.-based food chain, said Winn-Dixie has identified a tentative replacement location in the area. But he declined to identify the site before the company's plans are formalized.

The lease on the Virginia 419 location has expired, Hardesty said. He said Winn-Dixie is closing its older, smaller stores and opening larger and more modern supermarkets. He said employees will be offered jobs at other stores. Winn-Dixie operates other valley stores at Roanoke-Salem Plaza, Vinton, West Salem Plaza and Troutville. - Staff report
