HAMPTON STUDENTS CLAIM INTIMIDATION

At a news conference Thursday, three Hampton University students said students and faculty are afraid to speak out against the choice of President Bush as the school's commencement speaker.

"Everyone's opposed to Bush coming," sophomore Lasharn Williams said. "They are afraid to come out, because they fear [University President William] Harvey will do something to them."

A group calling itself the Concerned Citizens Committee organized the news conference. The main speaker, Danielle Alexander of Washington, D.C., said faculty members, as well as students, have been "threatened" not to oppose Bush's visit.

"Some faculty members have reported being told that `heads will roll' if they voice any opposition to this decision," she said.

"Hampton University will not even dignify such unsubstantiated allegations with a response," school spokeswoman Kathy Edwards said.
