WIDEN 604, BAN THROUGH TRUCKS

KAREN DOLLARHITE (letter, March 30) was correct in that there had been three traffic deaths on Route 604 in the last several months. She failed to mention a large truck was involved in each of these accidents.

I agree that the state needs to do something to correct the problem, but I disagree with her assessment that the cause is the 55-mph speed limit on this road. The problem is the amount of truck traffic using 604 to travel from Route 460 to Interstate 81, often to bypass the truck scales on I-81.

This road should be widened to four lanes, and through trucks should be barred. I believe that these steps would greatly improve both the safety and the traffic flow for those of us who must travel this road daily. ROBERT J. BEISHIR ROANOKE
