FURRER LEADS THE WAY IN TECH SCRIMMAGE

Veteran quarterback Will Furrer passed for 157 yards and two touchdowns Saturday to lead a high-powered first-team offense in Virginia Tech's controlled football scrimmage.

Operating on a rain-soaked field in Lane Stadium, Furrer tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to flanker John Rivers and connected with tailback Tony Kennedy on a 35-yard scoring play. Furrer completed seven of 10 passes, finding five different receivers.

Kennedy also scored on a 1-yard dive, one of four touchdowns scored on the ground. Others were by fullbacks Phil Bryant and Mike Hodges on 1-yard leaps and reserve quarterback Maurice DeShazo on a 20-yard burst around the end.

Ryan Williams rounded out the scoring with field goals from 37 and 42 yards.

"Will Furrer had an exciting day," coach Frank Beamer said. "He's had a very accurate spring throwing the football. But let's give credit, too, to the offensive line. Those guys did a fine job picking up stunts and blocking for both passing and running plays."

Beamer also praised the running of Vaughn Hebron, who carried six times for 70 yards.

End Bernard Basham had a big day on defense, making two sacks and a tackle for a loss. Defensive tackle Don Davis was the leading tackler with six, and cornerback David Bullock and safety Dennis Spain had five tackles each.

Beamer, however, said he was not pleased with the defense.

"We have made progress, but . . . I haven't seen our players yet get to the ball with the excitement we want them to show," the coach said.

Tech concludes spring practice next Saturday with the annual Maroon-White game in Lane Stadium. The kickoff is set for 7 p.m. - Staff report
