MASS TRANSIT RIDERSHIP HIT NEW HIGH IN 1990

Ridership on the nation's mass transit systems totaled 8.96 billion last year, the highest level on record and an increase of nearly 50 million over 1989, according to the American Public Transit Association.

Light rail and trolley systems registered a 10.3 percent increase and bus systems in cities with populations of 250,000 to 500,000 experienced a 14 percent increase, the association said.

The transit association is attempting to convince Congress to rewrite President Bush's five-year transportation spending plan to put less emphasis on highways and more on mass transit. - Associated Press
