JERVIS WINS AWARD FOR TEACHING SCIENCE

Biology and physical Science teacher Charles K. Jervis of Auburn High and Middle School in Riner received the 1991 New River Valley Math and Science Teaching Award from the Virginia Tech Chapter of Sigma Xi.

Jervis received a certificate and a cash award during the chapter's banquet in Blacksburg on April 4. The winner of this award is selected by the chapter from nominations received from Valley high schools.

As well as teaching, Jervis serves as chairman of his school's science department and is a sponsor for the Peer Support Group for Teens, Science Club, Computer Club and the NASA-STS Student Involvement Project.

The award includes $250 for the teacher and $500 for the school, to be spent at the teacher's discretion. Financial support for the award comes from New River Valley Industries as well as from Sigma Xi national and local funds.
